Outstanding Picture!, April 27, 2011

Wow!
This projector exceeded our expectations in every way. And when you read on, you’ll see that we had pretty high expectations already. The picture from this projector is stunning. This is the best value in home theater running. There are plenty of 5 star reviews already, and everyone else pretty much summed it up before me. But they are all true. Here’s why:
This is my 4th projector:
1st was an Epson Home 10, standard def (before bluray). I thought it was the greatest thing ever. Then the blue LCD panel went on it (look it up, it happens). A friend had the same projector but upgraded to a LCD tv, so I bought his Home 10. 3rd was an Epson MovieMate 72, a 720p lcd projector with built in DVD player. Although it had a convenient built-in DVD player, it was coupled to a PS3 via HDMI so we were getting a 720p picture out of it. I thought THAT was the coolest thing ever, until about 30 minutes ago.We are projecting on a 120″ diagonal very reflective (but not the most reflective) pull-down screen. Our living room is bathed in evening sunlight. Prior to 30 minutes ago, we had to wait until sundown to watch movies. The MovieMate 72 couldn’t compete against the sun hitting the screen. But it looked great at night. At the magnification we used, you could see individual pixels but the picture was still pretty cool. Well, not anymore.
The 8350 absolutely completely blows away the MovieMate 72. The difference from 720p to 1080p was amazing in our living room at 120″. The PS3 menu is as crisp as it was meant to be. I am not kidding when I say the 1080p makes the MovieMate’s 720p image look like SD. Other reviewers say that the incremental upgrade from 720p to 1080p wasn’t that great. In our living room, it was astounding.
In addition to the stunningly clear picture, we can now watch movies during the day.
Besides the awesome picture (which, really, should be the primary consideration), the 8350 has a number of other design improvements:
1. lighted remote
2. remembers previous input (finally!)
3. gamma and brightness buttons on remote (not buried in menus).
4. many more picture options, but ironically
5. no need for more picture setting options. default settings are perfect!
6. more color mode options for varying room lighting conditions
7. near silent operation (especially compared to the MovieMate). The person sitting next to it can’t tell it’s on.
8. new technology should prevent the blue lcd panel burnout problem.
9. longer zoom allows for further placement (instead of middle of room, projector can be in the back).
10. more lens shift.The only downside is this thing is HUGE. The little projector table we are using (soon to be ceiling mounted, the MovieMate doesn’t have a ceiling mount option) is completely filled by the 8350, about 50% more footprint than the MovieMate, which is already large by projector standards because it contains a DVD player.
(although there is no keystone, which I would have thought would be another downside, that is actually good because keystone, although it gives you a square image, takes away image quality. Better to square up the projector and then use lens-shift to get it centered on the screen. I wouldn’t be surprised if the keystone is what took away from our 720p projector’s image quality).
I can’t let this review go without saying something about the Avatar bluray (that’s what we used to test it). I’ve seen that movie about 15 times, 7 of them in Imax. Well, when Jake came up out of the river by the waterfall, we (wife, son, and I) were pretty sure the living room was going to fill with river water, because the water rushing toward the viewer looked so real; we all just laughed with glee. I’ve been through the entire projector lifecycle (480p, 720p, 1080p), and each time was an exciting revelation. This time was no different.
Get this projector. 5 minutes into Avatar and you will not care how much you spent on it. 60″ plasma? No thanks, I have a 120″ plasma!
